Crazy but true – Ant Hampton

Crazy but true is an interactive installation for children who, cast as ‘experts’, are given their lines via headphones, repeating what they hear without rehearsal. What results is a rolling list of extraordinary facts – some serious, others very funny. Despite the fun, one thing becomes clear for the adults watching: bringing a child into the world is the easy part. More difficult is how to bring the world into a child.

The number of wild animals on Earth has halved in the past 40 years.

You can’t kill yourself by holding your breath.

Butterflies taste with their feet.

Ant Hampton (British, b.1975 Fribourg, Switzerland) made his first show as Rotozaza in 1998, a project which ended up spanning performance, theatre, installation, intervention and writing-based works, and often focussing on the use of instructions given to unrehearsed ‘guest’ performers, both on stage and in public settings. Rotozaza became a partnership with Silvia Mercuriali, and ended in 2009 after their last production Etiquette, which was also the first Autoteatro piece. Since then Ant has worked with Glen Neath, Joji Koyama, Isambard Khroustaliov (Sam Britton), Tim Etchells, Gert-Jan Stam and Britt Hatzius to create other Autoteatro pieces.  Over 50 different language versions now exist of the various productions created so far.

Other solo projects include ongoing experimentation around ‘live portraiture’ as The Other People (La Otra Gente): structured encounters with people from non-theatrical milieu – this strand of Hampton’s work is starting to cross over with the Autoteatro work (Cue China, Someone Else…). He was head dramaturg for ‘Projected Scenarios’ at Manifesta7 Biennial for Contemporary Art and has contributed to projects by Jerome Bel and Forced Entertainment. Currently in development: together with Christophe Meierhans is ‘The Automatic Workshop: a collective exercise in self-disruption.
